January 2011 was a disastrous time for the people of Brisbane as people around the world witnessed Brisbane's worst flood since 1974. Since this time, people have worked hard to restore Brisbane to its former glory. We need to now go back to people around the world and encourage them to visit our wonderful city. So it is time to take Control of people's thoughts and ALTer their impression of Brisbane. To join this CREATive team you will need to develop an advertisement to sell to the world how well Brisbane has recovered from the floods.
During this breakout you will learn to take creative pictures, movies, develop a script to put together and advertisement to be shared with people on YouTube. Make sure you bring your imagination, ready to CONTROL, AlTernate and CREATE!
2. Facilitator: Amanda Sheridan
Have you ever wanted to design a comic book? What sort of superhero would protect Brisbane? What sort of dastardly figures would lurk in the shadows of Brisbane? Using the background of Brisbane's Powerhouse Museum, New Farm Park and many other landmarks of Brisbane, develop your own comic books with photographs and features of comic life and art rage and tell the stories of the heroes who saved Brisbane from destruction! Save Brisbane from destruction!

Ctrl Alt Create the Powerhouse News! Every day we watch news programs on television so that we may keep up with what is going on around us in the local area, state, nation, and world we live in. We also watch weather forecasts so that we may better plan our dress as well as our activities. We watch human-interest stories as well as editorials so that we have more information in forming our opinions and thoughts. We see advertisements and become more informed about products and services that are available. News programs offer us a wealth of information. Have you ever considered what goes into a news program, what are the parts that make up the program and how are they put together? Put on your news media caps and get ready to ‘Ctrl Alt Create’ the Powerhouse News.

Mythbusters, it is time to take control, alter people’s perspectives and create the true reality. In this breakout You will be challenged to perform a scientific experiment to verify or debunk a commonly held household myth.
You will design and carry out a scientific experiment safely using data logging equipment to assist you. Using your creative edge you will make a short video episode about the experiment.

A Simple Touch
Did you know you can CONTROL your iPod touch and use it as an ALTERNATIVE to CREATE? We all know how to entertain ourselves by playing with apps on the iPod touch. In this breakout you will use an iPod touch to create a short video, with original music! Your video will advertise the world of mobile technology and explore how much we use it everyday.

Within the grounds of the Powerhouse and New Farm Park there are many interesting and different forms and shapes. Within this breakout activity you will be melding the creative art of drawing with the power and creativity of a computer. You will start by drawing pictures of forms and shapes around the grounds, cutting them, scanning them and then editing and changing this creation within IPhoto and Keynote to create a completely new form. 7. Facilitator: Gary Quinlan
The Brisbane Powerhouse Museum was once the place that controlled and gave power to the Brisbane trams. Today the trams no longer operate in Brisbane. But maybe using today's new alternative technologies we can once again see some form of rapid public transport in Brisbane. Your job will be to design, build and create a model of a fully automated, self-propelled Tram system using LEGO and the LEGO Mindstorms program. You will have to program a tram to go around a track at the right speeds and stop safely at the stations. Are you up to the challenge to design and build a modern public tram system for the 21st century?

My name’s John Steele and I am an animation specialist who has a passion for computer animation and Claymation. In this break out you’ll be taught how to control a character, create a brief story board, calculate the frames needed for your scene, animate and film your characters and edit your animation as a movie file. Take control of a character, alter the path they choose and create a story. We’ll use a variety of programs and you’ll learn a lot. This will be the best breakout I promise. If you’re an artistic person, you will absolutely love this experience. If you’re not, I assure you will still absolutely love this experience! Creating with iPod Touches! It’s time to alter people’s view of an IPod touch as a “simple” technological device. Do you want to take control and learn how to take photos using an iPod touch? Maybe you want to know how to record your voice or how to turn your pictures into a comic? What about using your photos or comics to create your very own video? We will be doing this and much more as you learn how to use the iPod touch in creative and fun ways. Don't worry if you have never used an iPod Touch before, you will be amazed at how quickly you will learn how to use the iPod Touch in amazing and innovative ways. So come and learn how to create with iPod Touches!

Control Alt Create the perfect ad for Brisbane or an iconic Brisbane Landmark that will grab the attention of overseas and interstate tourists. You will use IPhoto, IMovie, green screen and garage band to create an ad that captures the essence of Brisbane, whether it is our great climate, the beautiful Brisbane River, iconic landmarks or those yellow bikes. Maybe you can think outside the box and sell the unsellable!!

Do you like to CONTROL the dance floor? Do you like to ALTernate your favourite dance music? Do you like to CREATE your own dance moves? Imagine doing all of this in an interactive environment. This activity introduces you to programming language through the creation of an interactive dance party. Learn how to create your favourite dance party moves and share them with others. Bring along your favourite dance tracks and work collaboratively to be part of the Powerhouse Interactive Dance Party. Breakout and Dance your way with Scratch!
12. Facilitator: Tracey Halstead
How many alternative ways can you show your creativity? Do you like presentations? Posters? Webpages? In this breakout we will explore and create some fantastic visual creations on the theme of Control Alt Create that mash together words, images and sounds using some easy to use internet programs like Prezi, Glogster and Wix. The best part is that your work is stored “in the clouds” so you can control when and where you retrieve it.
13. Facilitator: Kay Cantwell
The Powerhouse has had a long and fascinating history as a control power station, a home for alternative thinking and a venue for showcasing the work of those who create. Kids taking part in this workshop will make this history jump off the page, through the creation of interactive timelines that tell the story of the Powerhouse using multimedia including photos, video and music.’ Be inspired by the history of the Powerhouse and get ready to Control Alt Create!

This breakout activity will unleash the fine artist in you. Manipulate textures, photos, colours, spray paint, and glitter – all without getting your hands dirty! Mix, Mash and Merge to make a digital multimedia montage. CONTROL your blank canvas and artists' tools, ALTer your view of the exciting Powerhouse venue, and CREATE a masterpiece of worthy of hanging in the Powerhouse Gallery. Make sure you bring your imagination, ready to CONTROL, ALTernate and CREATE!
