Venue
BRISBANE POWERHOUSE
The Brisbane Powerhouse is located next to New Farm Park on the banks of the Brisbane River. There are many different rooms located in the Powerhouse which are ideal for presenting medium sized events such as the Kids Connect - Illuminate Brisbane 2010 Conference. They are the Power House Theatre, VISY Theatre, Graffiti Room and Turbine Platform.
The Brisbane Powerhouse is an old power station which in its time was used for various reasons. Before becoming a performing arts centre it was first used as a power station for the Brisbane City area. This power station was decommissioned in 1971 and was abandoned and left as a derelict building. From the late 1970s to 1990s homeless people sheltered in empty rooms, filmmakers used the walls and floors as a canvas for creating alternative film and street kids found refuge in the cavernous ruins. The army also used the site for ‘target practice’ and other various army exercises.
We are using the Powerhouse for our conference because of the significant role it has played in Brisbane's history. For more information visit the Power House website at http://www.brisbanepowerhouse.org/.
